Leaders Set the Upper Limit

I have often written about the role of leadership teams and their responsibility to fight for the greater good of the company. This includes articulating a vision, determining structure, discovering core values, setting expectations for all team members, and ensuring people have the necessary tools and resources needed to meet those expectations. Those resources include coaching and personal development.

Recently, I found myself thinking about a leadership team’s responsibility to ensure they have the necessary tools, resources, personal development, and coaching to ensure they are leading well. I am having discussions around this topic with the leadership teams I coach and guide.

If a leadership team member or the leadership team as a whole is not learning, growing, and developing consistently, they will create a ceiling that will limit their teams’ ability to perform. This is one of the times when it is safe to say a team is only as good as their leaders.

How well a team performs shines a light on how well their leaders perform. If leaders are open-minded, invest their energy in creativity, and strive to shape their future, their teams will follow suit. If not, teams will either leave or do the least amount of work necessary.

We have all probably heard the statement “Lead or get out of the way,” which is attributed to both Thomas Paine and General George Patton. The choice is yours.
