I have a friend who teaches adults who are afraid of water how to swim.
He often says, “Fish don’t know the water they swim in.” They just swim. The ocean (I’m partial to the ocean, having grown up across the street from it, so I’ll stick with the ocean metaphor!) is their life; it is the world to which the fish are accustomed. As a result, they really don’t think about the water they swim in. They just swim.
Perhaps you don’t think about the water you swim in. You are accustomed to it. Do you ever think about your ocean? Most entrepreneurs don’t. They are busy working “in” the business and rarely work “on” the business.
One of the first questions we ask Leadership Teams is “Are you ready and willing to become your best?” Before I let the team answer, I explain that “your best” entails:
- Becoming both healthy and smart. Understanding how you do what you do; having the appropriate strategy in place; being open and honest; presenting a united front, with no politics and absolute organizational clarity .
- Becoming a Leadership Team. Having only a few rules; acting consistently; accepting that all company issues are created by you and as a great team you can solve them all
- Running your business on one operating system. You can only build a great company on one operating system; reducing complexity, and everyone speaking the same language
- Strengthening the Six Key Components™ of your business. Vision, People, Data, Issues, Processes and Traction
Being your best should be non-negotiable in your company. You don’t have to be best friends with everybody in your company, but you do have to be able to swim in the ocean with them.
The great thing about EOS® is it gives you a roadmap to becoming your best. It provides a framework of systems and processes that allow you to take your business to the next level.
